Terminology & Functionality |
|
1. |
What is a “two-way” radio? |
|
a. |
A two-way radio is one that both transmits and receives radio
signals. In layman’s terms, a walkie-talkie is what most people
would call the equipment we offer. (back

|
2. |
What is the range of a two-way radio?
|
|
a. |
A simple question but a complicate answer… A portable or hand
held radio will usually be able to communicate at least 1
kilometre. Distance is variable and dependent on both terrain
and prevailing weather conditions. With a mobile of vehicle
mounted unit, it us usually possible to communicate 2 to 7
kilometres, subject to the previous outlined variables.
Incorporating a repeater into the system may extend the range to
15 kilometres, but a trunked system can communicate over much
greater distances. Our staff will advise you on the best system
to meet your individual requirements at time of consultation. (back

3. |
What’s a repeater and will I need one?
|
|
a. |
A repeater is a device that takes a radio signal (for example
from your portable radio) and re-transmits it at higher power
for extended coverage. (back

|
4. |
Can anyone other than the intended recipient
hear what I’m saying? |
|
a. |
It is technically possible, although difficult as the radios that
you will rent will have private, coded frequencies. This means
that you are very unlikely to overhear anyone else’s
transmissions. (back

|
5. |
Do two-way radios work inside a building? |
|
a. |
For indoor use, we provide UHF radios that readily penetrate
concrete, steel walls. In some instances it may also be
necessary to install a repeater to extend coverage. (back
to FAQ list) |
|
6. |
What about a Frequency License?
|
|
a. |
Not usually an issue as the operating frequencies will be either
your own, or one owned by the company. The digitally coded
frequencies will therefore not interfere with other designated
(or occupied) frequencies.

Radio
vs. Mobile Phone |
|
7. |
What is the advantage of two way radios over
mobile phones? |
|
a. |
Instant communication! Without a doubt, two-way radio is the most
reliable and widely used team communications solution. (back
to FAQ list) |
|
8. |
What about push-to-talk mobile phone communications instead? |
|
a. |
Push-to-talk is simply not suited to rapid and reliable team
communications. Aside from the cost (every time you push to
talk, it costs you), the service is subject to network
availability - not ideal if instant communications are critical.
